What to Expect During a Professional Duct Cleaning

You've booked your appointment — now what? Many homeowners are curious (and a little nervous) about what professional duct cleaning involves. Here's a step-by-step walkthrough of the Duct Doctors process, from the moment we arrive to the final handshake.

Our Duct Doctors technicians arrive in uniform, ready to transform your indoor air quality.

Step 1: Arrival & Walkthrough (15 minutes)

Our uniformed technician arrives in a marked Duct Doctors vehicle. We start with a brief walkthrough of your home to identify all supply and return registers, locate your air handler/furnace, and discuss any specific concerns you have — musty smells, particular rooms with poor airflow, or allergy issues your family is experiencing.

Step 2: Pre-Inspection with Camera (15-30 minutes)

Before we clean anything, we show you exactly what we're dealing with. Our technician inserts a high-definition camera scope into your ductwork to capture real-time video. Most clients are shocked to see the buildup — dust bunnies, construction debris, pet hair, and sometimes even toys or objects that found their way into vents. These "before" photos become part of your documentation package.

Step 3: System Protection & Setup (15 minutes)

We protect your floors with drop cloths in work areas. Our powerful HEPA-filtered vacuum unit is connected to your main duct trunk line, creating negative pressure throughout the system. This ensures that all loosened debris is pulled directly into our containment — never released into your living space.

Step 4: Agitation & Extraction (30-60 minutes)

Using a combination of pneumatic rotary brushes, compressed air tools, and soft-bristled hand brushes, our technician thoroughly agitates every duct surface. This mechanical action dislodges caked-on dust, mold, and debris that vacuuming alone can't remove. The negative air pressure instantly captures all airborne particles.

Step 5: Component Cleaning (15-20 minutes)

We don't just clean the ducts — we clean the entire system. This includes the blower motor and fan, evaporator coil, drain pan, and the interior of your air handler or furnace cabinet. A clean blower means better efficiency and quieter operation.

Step 6: Sanitization (10 minutes)

After thorough mechanical cleaning, we apply an EPA-registered, hospital-grade antimicrobial fog throughout your duct system. This eliminates any remaining bacteria, mold spores, and mildew, leaving your ducts not just clean but sanitized. The product is family and pet safe once dry.

Step 7: Post-Inspection & Documentation (10 minutes)

We run the camera again through the same sections so you can compare side-by-side with the "before" footage. The difference is dramatic — and we provide you with the before/after photos for your records. We also check airflow at every register to confirm the system is performing at full capacity.

How Long Does It Take?

For an average 2,000-3,000 sq. ft. home, the entire process takes 2-4 hours. Larger homes, or those with multiple HVAC systems, may take longer. We'll give you a time estimate during your initial consultation.
